Seasonal Setup Changes: Why Your Action Moves Twice a Year

Every year, thousands of guitars "develop a buzz" in January and "get hard to play" in July, having never been touched. Nothing broke. The neck and body are wood, the air changed, and the geometry moved a few thousandths of an inch — which at string height is the whole game. Here is what actually moves, how to measure it, and how to adjust for it safely.

What the seasons do to a neck

Wood swells across the grain as humidity rises and shrinks as it falls. On a guitar this shows up two ways:

If your environment is stable at 45–55% RH year round, most of this never happens — controlling humidity is the better fix, and the humidity guide covers it. But most houses swing, so most guitars want a small adjustment as heating season starts and again when it ends.

Measure before touching anything

The order matters: relief first, then action, then intonation, because each one changes the next.

Relief

Put a capo at the first fret and fret the low E where the neck meets the body (about the 14th fret on most acoustics, 17th on many electrics). The string is now a straightedge. Look at the gap between the string and the top of the 7th or 8th fret:

Adjusting the truss rod

The truss rod counteracts string tension to set relief. It is not an action screw and not fragile voodoo — it is a bolt, and small moves are all it ever needs. Sweetwater's SweetCare repair techs walk through the same process in more depth if you want a second reference before touching a wrench.

  1. Find the adjustment point (headstock under a cover, or through the soundhole on most acoustics) and use the exact wrench size — a rounded truss nut is an expensive repair.
  2. Righty-tighty reduces relief (straightens the neck, for summer bow); lefty-loosey adds relief (for winter buzz). Orient yourself as if looking down the nut's axis from the direction you insert the wrench.
  3. Move in an eighth to a quarter turn, retune to pitch, and remeasure — the same turn-and-recheck cadence SweetCare recommends. Big moves are never needed for seasonal drift; the whole annual swing is usually within half a turn.
  4. Let it settle. Wood creeps — remeasure the next day before deciding it needs more.
  5. If the nut is very stiff, or you reach the end of its travel without effect, stop. That is tech territory.

When relief isn't enough

If relief is correct but the action is still off from your baseline, the string height itself needs adjusting: bridge saddle screws or thumbwheels on electrics, and saddle height on acoustics — some players in extreme climates keep two acoustic saddles, a slightly taller "winter saddle" and a shorter "summer" one, and swap them at the season change instead of sanding anything. After any relief or action change, check intonation at the 12th fret; it usually drifts a little and electrics can be corrected at the saddles in a few minutes.

A sane seasonal routine

Twenty minutes twice a year, and the "January buzz" stops being a mystery and starts being a quarter turn.
