Humidity and Your Guitar: The 45–55% Rule

Most guitar damage that shows up "out of nowhere" — sharp fret ends, a new buzz, a hairline crack along the top — is not sudden at all. It is the wood responding to weeks of air that was too dry or too wet. Humidity is the single environmental factor that matters most for a guitar, and it is also the cheapest one to control.

Why wood moves

A guitar is built from thin plates of solid or laminated wood, and wood is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture from humid air and releases it into dry air. Builders assemble guitars at a controlled humidity — most major shops hold their factories somewhere near 45–50% relative humidity (RH) — so the instrument's geometry assumes that environment. Finish slows the exchange down but does not stop it. When the surrounding air drifts far from the build environment for more than a few days, the wood shrinks or swells, and everything glued to it has to follow.

The commonly recommended range for storage is 45–55% RH — the same range Taylor Guitars specifies for keeping an instrument stable. Short excursions outside it are harmless. What hurts is duration: a week below 35% starts to pull measurable moisture out of a spruce top; a winter below 30% is how cracks happen.

Excess humidity is slower to cause permanent damage but just as real. Above roughly 60% sustained, the top swells and bellies upward, which raises the action and makes the guitar feel stiff and sound dull — players often describe it as a wet blanket over the tone. Above 70% for long stretches, you risk glue joints creeping, bridges peeling, and mildew inside the case, the same failure modes Taylor documents for over-humidified guitars. If your guitar feels harder to play every summer and the action measurably rises, the room is too wet.

Measure before you treat

Guessing at humidity is pointless because indoor RH swings dramatically with heating and air conditioning. A digital hygrometer costs about as much as a set of strings. Buy two if you can: keep one in the case and one in the room, because the two readings can differ by 15 points or more. Inexpensive sensors drift, so sanity-check a new one against a second unit — if they disagree by more than a few percent, split the difference and treat readings as approximate.

Fixing dry air

In winter, heated indoor air is dry almost everywhere — even in humid climates, because warming cold air drops its relative humidity. Two approaches work:

Fixing wet air

For chronic dampness — basements, coastal summers — a dehumidifier or steady air conditioning does the heavy lifting. Inside the case, swap the humidifier for silica gel or two-way packs, which pull moisture down toward their target instead of adding more. Avoid storing instruments in basements and garages entirely if you can; both combine humidity extremes with temperature swings.

Rate of change matters too

Wood tolerates slow seasonal drift far better than shocks. Bringing a cold, dry guitar straight into a warm room and opening the case immediately is how finish checking happens: the lacquer contracts and expands faster than the wood under it. After transport in the cold, let the closed case sit for half an hour before opening it. The same logic applies to moving a guitar between a dry house and a humid gig — the case buffers the transition.

When to get help

If you find an open crack, a lifting bridge, or a top that stays sunken after two weeks of proper humidification, stop adjusting and see a repair tech. Rehydrating a badly dried guitar is a controlled, weeks-long process — done at home with soaked sponges it often swells the wood past where it should be. Everything short of that, though, is preventable with a working hygrometer, a case humidifier, and the habit of glancing at the numbers once a week.
