When to Change Guitar Strings — and How to Do It Right

Strings are the cheapest part of your signal chain and the one that degrades fastest. A dead set robs sustain, ruins intonation, and makes even a well-set-up guitar fight you. Here is how strings actually wear out, a change schedule based on hours rather than guilt, and a restring technique that stays in tune.
How strings die
Three things kill a set of strings, and none of them is dramatic:
- Corrosion. Sweat is mildly acidic and salty. It attacks the plain steel strings directly and works into the windings of the wound strings, where it cannot be wiped away. Skin oil and dead skin pack into the winding gaps too, adding mass unevenly along the string — D'Addario's own string-care guidance points to the same buildup as the main reason strings deaden.
- Fret wear. Run a fingertip along the underside of a string that has some miles on it and you will feel small flat dents where it meets each fret. Every dent is a point where the string's mass and stiffness change.
- Work-hardening. Metal that is repeatedly bent — every fretted note, every bend — stiffens and loses elasticity over time.
The result is a string that no longer vibrates uniformly. That is why old strings will not intonate: a string with uneven mass goes progressively sharper or flatter as you play up the neck no matter where the saddle sits. It is also why they sound dull — the upper harmonics decay almost immediately.
A realistic cadence
Calendar rules ("every month") ignore how much you actually play, and hour rules ignore body chemistry, so combine them:
- Uncoated strings: roughly every 100 hours of playing or every three months, whichever comes first. An hour a day puts you at a fresh set every three months or so; a weekend player can stretch further.
- Coated strings last two to three times longer for most players, which is the honest math behind their higher price — D'Addario makes the same case for its own coated XT/XS lines.
- Sweaty hands shorten everything. Some players kill uncoated strings in two weeks; some seem to preserve them for six months. Your corrosion rate is personal — watch the strings, not the calendar.
- Recording or a big gig: restring one or two days ahead, so the strings are settled but still bright.
Signs a set is finished
- Chords ring fine open but sound sour up the neck, and the 12th-fret note reads noticeably sharp or flat against the open string even after a saddle check.
- The wound strings look gray, feel rough, or show rust spots; the plain strings have lost their shine at the frets you use most.
- Harmonics at the 12th fret are weak or hard to sound.
- Tuning has become unstable for no mechanical reason.
- You feel kinks or flat spots sliding a finger under the string.

Restringing technique
One at a time, or all off?
For a plain restring, change strings one at a time — it keeps tension on the neck and, on a floating tremolo, saves you a long re-balancing session. Taking all six off at once will not harm a neck in the short term (the myth persists, but necks survive shipping without strings), and it is the right call when you want to clean the fretboard or polish frets. If you have a floating trem, block it with a folded cloth under the bridge before removing everything.
Winding for tuning stability
- Anchor the ball end fully — on an acoustic, seat the ball against the bridge plate, not the pin tip; push the pin down while pulling gently up on the string until it stops rising.
- Leave the right slack before winding: pull the string taut to its tuner post, then give it about one extra post-to-post span (roughly two inches of slack at the post). That yields two to three wraps on the wound strings and three to four on the plain strings — enough for grip, not enough to make a spongy coil.
- Use a locking wind on the plain strings: pass the string through the post hole, bring the tail around and under the incoming string, then bend it up so the first wrap pinches it. This is the single biggest tuning-stability upgrade a restring can have on standard tuners.
- Wind downward on the post, each wrap below the last, so the string leaves the post low and increases its break angle over the nut.
- Tune up to pitch, never down to it. If you overshoot, drop below the target and come back up so the gears stay loaded.
Stretch, then trust it
Fresh strings go flat because the wraps at both ends are still seating, not because the metal is stretching much. Speed the process: fret at the first fret, pull the string gently upward at the 12th, retune, and repeat until the pitch stops dropping — usually three or four passes per string. Two minutes of stretching saves a whole rehearsal of retuning.
Small finishing touches
- Clip string ends close to the post so they do not rattle or draw blood.
- If a string pings while tuning, the nut slot is grabbing — a scribble of soft pencil graphite in the slot usually cures it.
- Wipe the strings and fretboard with a dry cloth after every session and wash your hands before playing. Nothing extends string life more per second of effort.
